What is the key to becoming global citizens? If I had to reduce it to one sentence, it would be this: we must learn to love ourselves. It may sound simplistic, but how many of us truly love ourselves? Most humans do not, at least not completely, not deeply.
But if we learn to connect with the energy of love-consciousness that lies within us, then all fear, all separation, all that does not vibrate in love, will begin to dissolve. In doing so, we empty ourselves, in the sense that we become light, happy and full of love. When we are empty, we can invite beauty, absorb it into our being, until our very bones are full of life, vibrating fully in the present moment, with the intimacy of the immediate, of what is, of what it means to be alive
Then we offer that happiness to our world. We begin to live in the present moment, to flow with life. We become the actions of love.
I believe that this is the solution for humanity. By learning to love ourselves and discover our inner abundance, we no longer live in fear, and we can see ourselves in everyone else. Then what do we do? We just give. I have taught prisoners, former guerrillas and the terminally ill to do just that. If people in such extreme situations can do it, then we have no excuse. We can all find peace and joy.
All this you have heard before: all you need is love, you cannot fight for peace, we must protect the planet, we must unite, see beyond the superficial differences of our religions and transcend our ideas based on prejudice and fear. You’ve heard it in songs and from the mouths of teachers, echoing through the ages. The great sages of each civilization always guide us towards unity, peace and evolution. There is nothing new here: the only question left to answer is: you may have heard, but have you really listened?
Jacques Delors, president of UNESCO’s commission on education, described the vision of his report as a “necessary utopia”. Yes, it is true that a united world is a utopia, and that must become reality, not because we should fear the dangers of the alternative, but simply because humanity deserves nothing less.
The fact that we do not know a time when there was no conflict in the world does not mean that it is impossible to achieve. The fact that we have spent so many years of our lives fighting against injustice does not mean that it has to be like this forever.
However, if we want to live some day in that “necessary utopia”, we must begin to be utopian now! Do not wait for our leaders to make it happen, let’s begin to radiate in our environment the presence of peace that can turn fear into love, greed into generosity and transform us all into true global citizens.
